Yeast Infections in Dogs’ Ears During Cooler, Damp Weather

Vet looking in dog's ear

As temperatures drop and humidity rises, many dogs become prone to ear issues — particularly yeast infections. The combination of cooler weather, damp conditions, and less frequent ear drying after baths or walks can create the perfect environment for yeast to grow.

Why Yeast Infections Happen

Yeast naturally lives on your dog’s skin and ears in small amounts. Problems arise when moisture or irritation allows it to overgrow. Breeds with floppy ears or heavy fur around the ears (like Cocker Spaniels, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers) are especially susceptible.

Common Signs of a Yeast Infection

  • Persistent ear scratching or head shaking
  • A sour or musty odor from the ears
  • Red, inflamed, or scaly ear flaps
  • Brown or yellow discharge
  • Discomfort when the ears are touched

Prevention and Treatment

Keeping your dog’s ears clean and dry is key. After baths or outdoor play, gently dry the ear area with a towel. Regular ear cleanings with a vet-approved solution can also help reduce buildup.

If you notice any odor, discharge, or redness, avoid over-the-counter remedies — they can worsen the issue if the cause isn’t truly yeast. Instead, schedule an exam with your veterinarian to confirm the infection and prescribe appropriate medication.
