Respiratory Illness in Dogs

Dear Partners Animal Hospital West Loop Clients,

As you may have heard, there is a respiratory illness that is affecting our canine companions. There is no need for panic, but we wanted to provide you with some additional information.

We are still learning about this illness, but what we do know is that it mimics the symptoms of kennel cough. Here are some of the common symptoms of the respiratory illness in dogs:
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing or nasal whistling
  • Nasal or eye discharge
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, please call the office for further evaluation and instructions.

Here are a few precautions you can take to minimize your companion’s exposure:
  • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, including Bordetella and canine influenza.
  • Avoid dog parks and areas where there are multiple dogs congregated.
  • Practice good hygiene, especially after outdoor activities.
  • Try a dog sitter as an alternative to boarding.
  • Discuss infection reduction practices with your boarder and/or groomer.
If you have any questions, please call the office.

Thank you,
